Flip Slider and Hinge Barrel are two intricate metal injection
molded components, forming the dual-hinge opening mechanism
in PEBL mobile phone. They are made of 17-4 PH stainless steel.
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process allows thin wall
geometries, overhanging structures, and three-dimensional
designs. Both parts are coined, machined, polished, and plated.
Machining these parts, an alternative fabrication method, would
entail more components and associated assembly processes
that result in much higher cost compared to MIM.
Flip Slider and Hinge Barrel were awarded the Grand Prize International P/M Design
Excellence Award by (MPIF), USA in 2006. |
